Outline of Course Content
This unit introduces students to the world of business and the foundational economic principles that shape it. Students will examine how market forces such as supply and demand influence business decision-making, and explore how Canadian businesses respond to consumer needs, government interventions, and trade relationships. This unit sets the stage for ethical and socially responsible business practices by encouraging students to reflect on the role of businesses in their communities, including their interactions with Indigenous enterprises and their commitment to sustainability.
In this unit, students begin the journey of developing their entrepreneurial mindset through creativity, collaboration, and ideation. They will engage in the early stages of venture creation—designing, prototyping, and refining ideas while applying problem-solving skills to real-world challenges. Students will learn how to evaluate their ideas through economic, ethical, social, and environmental lenses and begin creating their business portfolio, documenting their learning and entrepreneurial growth.
This unit focuses on turning entrepreneurial ideas into actionable business ventures. Students will identify key resources, plan logistics, create a brand and marketing strategy, develop a financial plan, and prepare to launch their business idea. They will explore funding opportunities and apply ethical and accessible customer service approaches while building a strong business pitch. Portfolio documentation continues as students reflect on planning challenges and refine their business competencies.
In the final unit, students deepen their understanding of business functions by exploring the operational, managerial, and human resource aspects of running a business. They will develop production plans, analyze the efficiency and sustainability of business processes, explore leadership styles in management, and reflect on the ethical responsibilities of business leaders. Students will prepare their final business pitch and consolidate their learning through their portfolio, showcasing their competencies and entrepreneurial growth.
Students in this course will be evaluated through practical and creative tasks such as developing business ideas, preparing financial documents, and building a portfolio that documents their entrepreneurial growth. Assessments are based on the four achievement categories—Knowledge, Thinking, Communication, and Application—and reflect real-world business challenges. The course culminates in a final business pitch and portfolio presentation that showcases each student’s leadership, planning, and innovation skills.
