Overall Curriculum Expectations
Throughout the course, students will be provided with numerous and varied opportunities to demonstrate the full extent of their achievement of the curriculum expectations, across all four categories of knowledge and skills. Evaluations will reflect each student’s most consistent level of achievement. The overall learning expectations for this course are encompassed in the following strands:
LIVING SKILLS
By the end of this course, students will:
1. Demonstrate personal and interpersonal skills and the use of critical and creative thinking processes as they acquire knowledge and skills in connection with the expectations in the Active Living, Movement Competence, and Healthy Living strands for this grade.
ACTIVE LIVING
By the end of this course, students will:
1. Participate actively and regularly in a wide variety of physical activities, and demonstrate an understanding of factors that can influence and support their participation in physical activity now and throughout their lives.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of being physically active, and apply physical fitness concepts and practices that contribute to healthy, active living.
3. Demonstrate responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others as they participate in physical activities.
MOVEMENT COMPETENCE: SKILLS, CONCEPTS, AND STRATEGIES
By the end of this course, students will:
1. Perform movement skills, demonstrating an understanding of the basic requirements of the skills and applying movement concepts as appropriate, as they engage in a variety of physical activities.
2. Apply movement strategies appropriately, demonstrating an understanding of the components of a variety of physical activities, in order to enhance their ability to participate successfully in those activities.
MOVEMENT COMPETENCE: SKILLS, CONCEPTS, AND STRATEGIES
By the end of this course, students will:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of factors that contribute to healthy development.
2. Demonstrate the ability to apply health knowledge and living skills to make reasoned decisions and take appropriate actions relating to their personal health and well-being.
3. Demonstrate the ability to make connections that relate to health and well-being – how their choices and behaviours affect both themselves and others, and how factors in the world around them affect their own and others’ health and well-being.
Outline of Course Content
Students will explore the differences between wellness, health, and physical fitness, and how physical activity can benefit each of them. They will also talk about how to stay safe while being active by paying attention to our surroundings. Additionally, students will learn some basic first-aid skills that can help us respond to emergencies if someone gets hurt. By the end of the unit, they will have a better understanding of how to take care of themselves and others when it comes to being active and staying healthy.
In this unit, students will explore the key components of skill-related fitness, their importance in sports and everyday tasks, and the benefits of regular training to improve these components. They will also learn about the principles of training and their impact on conditioning, including the FITT principle which can be used to plan a personal training workout. Additionally, students will examine common injuries associated with training and conditioning, and develop strategies to reduce the risk of injuries during physical activities. The unit will also cover heart-rate monitoring, including the pulse points in the human body, the nature of heart-rate zones, and how heart rate changes with modifications in exercise intensity. Finally, students will learn about various forms of strength and endurance training, flexibility training, and how to develop muscular strength and endurance through resistance-training exercises. By the end of this unit, students will have a strong foundation in the principles and practices of physical fitness, and be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to design and implement a personalized training program to meet their fitness goals.
Throughout this course, you will discover that the skills utilized in one sport or activity have similarities to those in other sports or activities. You will have the chance to practice these skills and explore how you can enhance them when working with others. Besides, you will have the opportunity to become an official in your chosen sport. You will learn about the role and responsibilities of an official and gain first-hand experience in this aspect of sport. In addition, you will investigate different categories of sports and games. You will create a brief report on a sport or physical activity of your choice. This will allow you to apply what you have learned throughout the course and view your selected activities in a new light.
In this Unit, you will delve into the world of personnel management and learn how to effectively manage and make decisions that positively impact your physical and social-emotional well-being. Personal management involves learning about your unique qualities, strengths, weaknesses, and values, and how they shape who you are. Through this exploration, you will discover how certain qualities may be important for specific jobs or careers. Furthermore, you will be reminded of the holistic nature of health and wellness, which encompasses mental, social, emotional, spiritual, and physical aspects that expand our potential to live and work effectively. As you progress through the module, you will become more aware of your feelings and values related to your health and wellness, which ultimately have an impact on personal decision-making and management. In the subsequent module, you will build on this foundation by exploring the importance of social management and how to build meaningful relationships with the important people in your life, such as family, friends, significant others, and co-workers.
This unit covers various topics related to personal health and decision-making. You will explore gambling addiction, substance use and abuse, and substance dependence, and their effects on personal health. Additionally, you will learn about the use of drugs in sport, including the impact of performance-enhancing substances. The unit also offers problem-solving strategies and community resources for responding to potentially dangerous situations related to substance use and abuse. Each lesson provides practical information from both medical and safety perspectives. It’s essential for individuals to be fully informed about the facts and potential risks involved in sexual activity, as it is a personal choice. Other factors that can influence decision making, such as spirituality and family values, should also be considered.
